[Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome in anorexia (author's transl)]. 1982

B Weder, and H P Ludin, and R Hoigné

A rare case of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome due to malnutrition (in a 35-year-old woman) is reported. It was probably the result of a psychiatric condition progressing to severe inanition. In the course of the malnutrition typical Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome developed. Vitamin B1 deficiency was confirmed by determining erythrocyte transketolase. At the same time there was hypomagnesiaemia; substitution treatment led to complete recovery.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008275 Magnesium Deficiency A nutritional condition produced by a deficiency of magnesium in the diet, characterized by anorexia, nausea, vomiting, lethargy, and weakness. Symptoms are paresthesias, muscle cramps, irritability, decreased attention span, and mental confusion, possibly requiring months to appear. Deficiency of body magnesium can exist even when serum values are normal. In addition, magnesium deficiency may be organ-selective, since certain tissues become deficient before others. D013832 Thiamine Deficiency A nutritional condition produced by a deficiency of THIAMINE in the diet, characterized by anorexia, irritability, and weight loss. Later, patients experience weakness, peripheral neuropathy, headache, and tachycardia. In addition to being caused by a poor diet, thiamine deficiency in the United States most commonly occurs as a result of alcoholism, since ethanol interferes with thiamine absorption. In countries relying on polished rice as a dietary staple, BERIBERI prevalence is very high. D014899 Wernicke Encephalopathy An acute neurological disorder characterized by the triad of ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and disturbances of mental activity or consciousness. Eye movement abnormalities include nystagmus, external rectus palsies, and reduced conjugate gaze. THIAMINE DEFICIENCY and chronic ALCOHOLISM are associated conditions. Pathologic features include periventricular petechial hemorrhages and neuropil breakdown in the diencephalon and brainstem. Chronic thiamine deficiency may lead to KORSAKOFF SYNDROME.
