Nasal mucociliary function during penicillin treatment. 1978

B Vinther, and O Elbrønd

Nasal mucociliary function was studied in 21 healthy subjects before, during and after penicillin administration. No change in the mucociliary function occurred during penicillin treatment. Nor was any difference observed between men and women or between smokers and non-smokers. On the other hand, the measurements revealed a significantly smaller intra-individual than inter-individual variation. As the epithelia of nasal cavity and Eustachian tube are morphologically of the same type it is concluded that the increased incidence of serous otitis media which has been observed after the introduction of penicillin in the treatment of acute otitis media can scarcely be due to an inhibitory effect of penicillin on the mucociliary function of the Eustachian tube.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008297 Male Males
D009297 Nasal Mucosa The mucous lining of the NASAL CAVITY, including lining of the nostril (vestibule) and the OLFACTORY MUCOSA. Nasal mucosa consists of ciliated cells, GOBLET CELLS, brush cells, small granule cells, basal cells (STEM CELLS) and glands containing both mucous and serous cells. Nasal Epithelium,Schneiderian Membrane,Epithelium, Nasal,Membrane, Schneiderian,Mucosa, Nasal
D010406 Penicillins A group of antibiotics that contain 6-aminopenicillanic acid with a side chain attached to the 6-amino group. The penicillin nucleus is the chief structural requirement for biological activity. The side-chain structure determines many of the antibacterial and pharmacological characteristics. (Goodman and Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, 8th ed, p1065) Antibiotics, Penicillin,Penicillin,Penicillin Antibiotics
D002923 Cilia Populations of thin, motile processes found covering the surface of ciliates (CILIOPHORA) or the free surface of the cells making up ciliated EPITHELIUM. Each cilium arises from a basic granule in the superficial layer of CYTOPLASM. The movement of cilia propels ciliates through the liquid in which they live. The movement of cilia on a ciliated epithelium serves to propel a surface layer of mucus or fluid. D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
D012737 Sex Factors Maleness or femaleness as a constituent element or influence contributing to the production of a result. It may be applicable to the cause or effect of a circumstance. It is used with human or animal concepts but should be differentiated from SEX CHARACTERISTICS, anatomical or physiological manifestations of sex, and from SEX DISTRIBUTION, the number of males and females in given circumstances.
