Monocyte chemotaxis in leukemia patients. 1980

D A Norris, and W L Weston, and D G Tubergen, and B Rose, and L F Odom

Monocyte chemotaxis was studied in 35 patients with ALL, six with CLL, six with AML, and 10 with CML before beginning chemotherapy. Function was contrasted to age-matched control groups. Significant inhibition of chemotaxis was seen in patients with ALL (p less than 0.001) and CLL (p less than 0.01), whereas function in CML and AML patients was not significantly depressed. The deficient monocyte chemotaxis was not due merely to decreased percentages of peripheral blood monocytes. Thus, in addition to numerical deficiencies in monocyte numbers, qualitative deficiencies in monocyte function exist in patients with ALL and CLL.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007938 Leukemia A progressive, malignant disease of the blood-forming organs, characterized by distorted proliferation and development of leukocytes and their precursors in the blood and bone marrow. Leukemias were originally termed acute or chronic based on life expectancy but now are classified according to cellular maturity. Acute leukemias consist of predominately immature cells; chronic leukemias are composed of more mature cells. D007945 Leukemia, Lymphoid Leukemia associated with HYPERPLASIA of the lymphoid tissues and increased numbers of circulating malignant LYMPHOCYTES and lymphoblasts. D007951 Leukemia, Myeloid Form of leukemia characterized by an uncontrolled proliferation of the myeloid lineage and their precursors (MYELOID PROGENITOR CELLS) in the bone marrow and other sites. D008214 Lymphocytes White blood cells formed in the body's lymphoid tissue. The nucleus is round or ovoid with coarse, irregularly clumped chromatin while the cytoplasm is typically pale blue with azurophilic (if any) granules. Most lymphocytes can be classified as either T or B (with subpopulations of each), or NATURAL KILLER CELLS. Lymphoid Cells,Cell, Lymphoid,Cells, Lymphoid,Lymphocyte,Lymphoid Cell

D009000 Monocytes Large, phagocytic mononuclear leukocytes produced in the vertebrate BONE MARROW and released into the BLOOD; contain a large, oval or somewhat indented nucleus surrounded by voluminous cytoplasm and numerous organelles. Monocyte
