Saphenous vein grafting for angina. 1981

J S Wright, and K Soo, and D A Pybus

An analysis of 200 consecutive patients treated by saphenous-vein bypass grafting has been carried out. One patient died in hospital, and one died nine months after surgery. Some of the factors which predispose to postoperative complications can be defined preoperatively. These are unstable angina, multiple vessels disease, and impaired left ventricular function. The complications of postoperative infarction, low cardiac output, and arrhythmia were higher in the presence of these factors. The use of cardioplegic myocardial protection lessened the incidence of complications in patients with impaired left ventricular function. Early follow-up revealed 96% of patients truly or virtually angina-free. Three patients suffered infarction within nine months of operation.

D011183 Postoperative Complications Pathologic processes that affect patients after a surgical procedure. They may or may not be related to the disease for which the surgery was done, and they may or may not be direct results of the surgery. Complication, Postoperative,Complications, Postoperative,Postoperative Complication
D002302 Cardiac Output The volume of BLOOD passing through the HEART per unit of time. It is usually expressed as liters (volume) per minute so as not to be confused with STROKE VOLUME (volume per beat). Cardiac Outputs,Output, Cardiac,Outputs, Cardiac
D005260 Female Females
D005500 Follow-Up Studies Studies in which individuals or populations are followed to assess the outcome of exposures, procedures, or effects of a characteristic, e.g., occurrence of disease. D006324 Heart Arrest, Induced A procedure to stop the contraction of MYOCARDIUM during HEART SURGERY. It is usually achieved with the use of chemicals (CARDIOPLEGIC SOLUTIONS) or cold temperature (such as chilled perfusate). D000787 Angina Pectoris The symptom of paroxysmal pain consequent to MYOCARDIAL ISCHEMIA usually of distinctive character, location and radiation. It is thought to be provoked by a transient stressful situation during which the oxygen requirements of the MYOCARDIUM exceed that supplied by the CORONARY CIRCULATION. Angor Pectoris,Stenocardia,Stenocardias
D001026 Coronary Artery Bypass Surgical therapy of ischemic coronary artery disease achieved by grafting a section of saphenous vein, internal mammary artery, or other substitute between the aorta and the obstructed coronary artery distal to the obstructive lesion.
