[Methylation of nucleic acids and its relation to carcinogenesis (author's transl)]. 1980

C Hanski, and G Stehlik

The physiological methylation of nucleic acids and its relation to their biological function are discussed and compared with the methylation which occurs during chemical, viral and radiation carcinogenesis. The significance of methylated nucleic acid components as cancer markers is evaluated.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008745 Methylation Addition of methyl groups. In histo-chemistry methylation is used to esterify carboxyl groups and remove sulfate groups by treating tissue sections with hot methanol in the presence of hydrochloric acid. (From Stedman, 25th ed) Methylations
D009369 Neoplasms New abnormal growth of tissue. Malignant neoplasms show a greater degree of anaplasia and have the properties of invasion and metastasis, compared to benign neoplasms. D009696 Nucleic Acids High molecular weight polymers containing a mixture of purine and pyrimidine nucleotides chained together by ribose or deoxyribose linkages. Nucleic Acid,Acid, Nucleic,Acids, Nucleic

D001671 Biochemistry The study of the composition, chemical structures, and chemical reactions of living things.
D012335 RNA, Ribosomal The most abundant form of RNA. Together with proteins, it forms the ribosomes, playing a structural role and also a role in ribosomal binding of mRNA and tRNAs. Individual chains are conventionally designated by their sedimentation coefficients. In eukaryotes, four large chains exist, synthesized in the nucleolus and constituting about 50% of the ribosome. D012359 tRNA Methyltransferases Enzymes that catalyze the S-adenosyl-L-methionine-dependent methylation of ribonucleotide bases within a transfer RNA molecule. EC 2.1.1.
