[Echograpic diagnosis of a rare malformation: iniencephaly (author's transl)]. 1980

D Vacelet, and B David

We describe a case of iniencephaly, which is a maldevelopment rare enough to warrant the publication of known cases. The ultrasound pictures that are taken and presented show a spina bifida and an omphalocoele were associated with the cerebral abnormality. It is further confirmation of the great value of routine ultrasound making early diagnosis of fetal malformations.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D009436 Neural Tube Defects Congenital malformations of the central nervous system and adjacent structures related to defective neural tube closure during the first trimester of pregnancy generally occurring between days 18-29 of gestation. Ectodermal and mesodermal malformations (mainly involving the skull and vertebrae) may occur as a result of defects of neural tube closure. D011247 Pregnancy The status during which female mammals carry their developing young (EMBRYOS or FETUSES) in utero before birth, beginning from FERTILIZATION to BIRTH. Gestation,Pregnancies
D004453 Echoencephalography Use of reflected ultrasound in the diagnosis of intracranial pathologic processes. Echoencephalographies
D005260 Female Females
D005539 Foramen Magnum The large hole at the base of the skull through which the SPINAL CORD passes. Foramen Magnums,Magnum, Foramen,Magnums, Foramen
D006554 Hernia, Umbilical A HERNIA due to an imperfect closure or weakness of the umbilical ring. It appears as a skin-covered protrusion at the UMBILICUS during crying, coughing, or straining. The hernia generally consists of OMENTUM or SMALL INTESTINE. The vast majority of umbilical hernias are congenital but can be acquired due to severe abdominal distention. D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults

D016136 Spina Bifida Occulta A common congenital midline defect of fusion of the vertebral arch without protrusion of the spinal cord or meninges. The lesion is also covered by skin. L5 and S1 are the most common vertebrae involved. The condition may be associated with an overlying area of hyperpigmented skin, a dermal sinus, or an abnormal patch of hair. The majority of individuals with this malformation are asymptomatic although there is an increased incidence of tethered cord syndrome and lumbar SPONDYLOSIS.
