The diagnostic value of cerebrospinal fluid lactic acid levels in meningitis. 1981

R Murata, and T Uemura

To assess the reliability of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) lactate levels in children for differentiating between bacterial and viral meningitis, we measured the CSF lactate levels using the carboxylic acid analyzer, enzymatic method and colorimetric determination. Lactate determination by these methods is a highly reliable indicator of the presence or absence of bacterial meningitis. Moreover, the duration of elevated CSF lactate levels coincided with the clinical response to therapy.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007773 Lactates Salts or esters of LACTIC ACID containing the general formula CH3CHOHCOOR.
D008581 Meningitis Inflammation of the coverings of the brain and/or spinal cord, which consist of the PIA MATER; ARACHNOID; and DURA MATER. Infections (viral, bacterial, and fungal) are the most common causes of this condition, but subarachnoid hemorrhage (HEMORRHAGES, SUBARACHNOID), chemical irritation (chemical MENINGITIS), granulomatous conditions, neoplastic conditions (CARCINOMATOUS MENINGITIS), and other inflammatory conditions may produce this syndrome. D008587 Meningitis, Viral Viral infections of the leptomeninges and subarachnoid space. Clinical manifestations include fever, headache, neck pain, vomiting, PHOTOPHOBIA, and signs of meningeal irritation.
