Effects of blood glucose levels on [14C]2-deoxyglucose uptake in rat brain tissue. 1980

W G Young, and J A Deutsch

Brain uptake of [14C]2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) was measured in fasted and fed rats. Enhanced uptake was observed in fasted rats. A statistically significant negative correlation was found between blood glucose levels and 2-DG uptake. The use of fasted, hypoglycemic animals and lower doses of 2-DG in 2-DG research is suggested in order to economize, to reduce variability, and to reduce attendant exposure to toxicity and radiation.
