Fetal lung maturity: the adjunctive use of ultrasound. 1982

S H Golde, and R Petrucha, and K W Meade, and L D Platt

Ultrasonic cephalometry (BPD) was retrospectively studied in 268 patients at risk for the development of hyaline membrane disease (HMD). Thirty-seven patients were diagnosed as having diabetes and were excluded. Of the remaining 231 patients, 123 (53%) were found to have a biparietal diameter of (BPD) greater than or equal to 9.2 cm. There were 92 patients delivered within 5 days of scanning and none developed HMD. A BPD of 9.2 cm corresponded to an L/S ratio of 2.8 (r = 0.45, p less than 0.05). The above results indicate that it is safe to deliver a nondiabetic patient in whom a fetal BPD of 9.2 cm has been obtained.

D012127 Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Newborn A condition of the newborn marked by DYSPNEA with CYANOSIS, heralded by such prodromal signs as dilatation of the alae nasi, expiratory grunt, and retraction of the suprasternal notch or costal margins, mostly frequently occurring in premature infants, children of diabetic mothers, and infants delivered by cesarean section, and sometimes with no apparent predisposing cause. D002508 Cephalometry The measurement of the dimensions of the HEAD. Craniometry
D005325 Fetal Organ Maturity Functional competence of specific organs or body systems of the FETUS in utero. Fetal Maturity, Functional,Functional Fetal Maturity,Maturity, Fetal Organ,Maturity, Functional Fetal,Organ Maturity, Fetal
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000653 Amniotic Fluid A clear, yellowish liquid that envelopes the FETUS inside the sac of AMNION. In the first trimester, it is likely a transudate of maternal or fetal plasma. In the second trimester, amniotic fluid derives primarily from fetal lung and kidney. Cells or substances in this fluid can be removed for prenatal diagnostic tests (AMNIOCENTESIS). D012189 Retrospective Studies Studies used to test etiologic hypotheses in which inferences about an exposure to putative causal factors are derived from data relating to characteristics of persons under study or to events or experiences in their past. The essential feature is that some of the persons under study have the disease or outcome of interest and their characteristics are compared with those of unaffected persons. D013109 Sphingomyelins A class of sphingolipids found largely in the brain and other nervous tissue. They contain phosphocholine or phosphoethanolamine as their polar head group so therefore are the only sphingolipids classified as PHOSPHOLIPIDS. Sphingomyelin
