[Diagnostic value of ultrasonography in pancreatic duct dilatation. Results in 29 cases (author's transl)]. 1982

Results of diagnostic ultrasonography in 29 patients with pancreatic duct dilatation were able to define the value of this procedure in the diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis and particularly cancer of the pancreas. Dilatation of the duct may in fact be the only ultrasonographic sign of a pancreatic lesion. It is now possible to study the pancreatic duct by ultrasonography, and this method of exploration should be employed whenever the pancreas has to be investigated.

D010183 Pancreatic Ducts Ducts that collect PANCREATIC JUICE from the PANCREAS and supply it to the DUODENUM. D010190 Pancreatic Neoplasms Tumors or cancer of the PANCREAS. Depending on the types of ISLET CELLS present in the tumors, various hormones can be secreted: GLUCAGON from PANCREATIC ALPHA CELLS; INSULIN from PANCREATIC BETA CELLS; and SOMATOSTATIN from the SOMATOSTATIN-SECRETING CELLS. Most are malignant except the insulin-producing tumors (INSULINOMA). D010195 Pancreatitis INFLAMMATION of the PANCREAS. Pancreatitis is classified as acute unless there are computed tomographic or endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatographic findings of CHRONIC PANCREATITIS (International Symposium on Acute Pancreatitis, Atlanta, 1992). The two most common forms of acute pancreatitis are ALCOHOLIC PANCREATITIS and gallstone pancreatitis. D002908 Chronic Disease Diseases which have one or more of the following characteristics: they are permanent, leave residual disability, are caused by nonreversible pathological alteration, require special training of the patient for rehabilitation, or may be expected to require a long period of supervision, observation, or care (Dictionary of Health Services Management, 2d ed). For epidemiological studies chronic disease often includes HEART DISEASES; STROKE; CANCER; and diabetes (DIABETES MELLITUS, TYPE 2).
