Analysis of two types of granulocyte transfusions in patients with acute leukemia and septicemia. 1982

E E Morse, and E Synder, and N Blumberg, and A J Katz

In a study of 300 patient episodes where filtration granulocytes or centrifuged granulocytes were transfused to neutropenic patients with fever, 81 cases of culture proven septicemia in patients with acute leukemia were analyzed. Age, sex, organisms, interval between fever and transfusion, average number of transfusion, and antibiotics were similar in the two groups. Centrifuged granulocytes produced a statistically significantly better recovery rate when compared with filtration granulocytes.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007938 Leukemia A progressive, malignant disease of the blood-forming organs, characterized by distorted proliferation and development of leukocytes and their precursors in the blood and bone marrow. Leukemias were originally termed acute or chronic based on life expectancy but now are classified according to cellular maturity. Acute leukemias consist of predominately immature cells; chronic leukemias are composed of more mature cells. D008297 Male Males
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D001769 Blood The body fluid that circulates in the vascular system (BLOOD VESSELS). Whole blood includes PLASMA and BLOOD CELLS.
D001803 Blood Transfusion The introduction of whole blood or blood component directly into the blood stream. (Dorland, 27th ed) Blood Transfusions,Transfusion, Blood,Transfusions, Blood
D002177 Candidiasis Infection with a fungus of the genus CANDIDA. It is usually a superficial infection of the moist areas of the body and is generally caused by CANDIDA ALBICANS. (Dorland, 27th ed) Candida Infection,Moniliasis,Candida Infections,Candidiases,Infection, Candida,Moniliases
D002498 Centrifugation Process of using a rotating machine to generate centrifugal force to separate substances of different densities, remove moisture, or simulate gravitational effects. It employs a large motor-driven apparatus with a long arm, at the end of which human and animal subjects, biological specimens, or equipment can be revolved and rotated at various speeds to study gravitational effects. D005260 Female Females
D006098 Granulocytes Leukocytes with abundant granules in the cytoplasm. They are divided into three groups according to the staining properties of the granules: neutrophilic, eosinophilic, and basophilic. Mature granulocytes are the NEUTROPHILS; EOSINOPHILS; and BASOPHILS. Granulocyte
