[Assay of protein and thyroid hormone concentrations in hemofiltrate (author's transl)]. 1982

H K Beyer, and K W Rumpf, and E Arlt

To assess protein and thyroid hormone loss during hemofiltration estimation of protein and thyroid hormone concentrations in the hemofiltrate were carried out. The protein loss during one week amounted to 4-6 g. Weekly loss of T4 was about 1,5 microgram, that of T4 0,5 microgram. These quantities are negligible and of no clinical relevance. Therefore substitutions of protein loss by albumin or thyroid hormones do not seem to be required in patients undergoing hemofiltration.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D001769 Blood The body fluid that circulates in the vascular system (BLOOD VESSELS). Whole blood includes PLASMA and BLOOD CELLS.
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D012709 Serum Albumin A major protein in the BLOOD. It is important in maintaining the colloidal osmotic pressure and transporting large organic molecules. Plasma Albumin,Albumin, Serum
D013974 Thyroxine The major hormone derived from the thyroid gland. Thyroxine is synthesized via the iodination of tyrosines (MONOIODOTYROSINE) and the coupling of iodotyrosines (DIIODOTYROSINE) in the THYROGLOBULIN. Thyroxine is released from thyroglobulin by proteolysis and secreted into the blood. Thyroxine is peripherally deiodinated to form TRIIODOTHYRONINE which exerts a broad spectrum of stimulatory effects on cell metabolism. D014284 Triiodothyronine A T3 thyroid hormone normally synthesized and secreted by the thyroid gland in much smaller quantities than thyroxine (T4). Most T3 is derived from peripheral monodeiodination of T4 at the 5' position of the outer ring of the iodothyronine nucleus. The hormone finally delivered and used by the tissues is mainly T3. D014462 Ultrafiltration The separation of particles from a suspension by passage through a filter with very fine pores. In ultrafiltration the separation is accomplished by convective transport; in DIALYSIS separation relies instead upon differential diffusion. Ultrafiltration occurs naturally and is a laboratory procedure. Artificial ultrafiltration of the blood is referred to as HEMOFILTRATION or HEMODIAFILTRATION (if combined with HEMODIALYSIS).
