Inhibition of gastric emptying by bombesin in man. 1982

Bombesin, administered by intravenous infusion (5 ng . kg-1 . min-1) for 60 min, significantly delayed gastric emptying of solids in man and strongly potentiated the gastrin response to food. However, no correlation was found between the difference in the integrated gastrin response (to meal and to meal plus bombesin) and the degree of delay in emptying. The effect of the peptide is most likely connected with the strong contraction of the gastroduodenal junction pinpointed in previous investigations.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007263 Infusions, Parenteral The administration of liquid medication, nutrient, or other fluid through some other route than the alimentary canal, usually over minutes or hours, either by gravity flow or often by infusion pumping. D008297 Male Males
D010455 Peptides Members of the class of compounds composed of AMINO ACIDS joined together by peptide bonds between adjacent amino acids into linear, branched or cyclical structures. OLIGOPEPTIDES are composed of approximately 2-12 amino acids. Polypeptides are composed of approximately 13 or more amino acids. PROTEINS are considered to be larger versions of peptides that can form into complex structures such as ENZYMES and RECEPTORS. Peptide,Polypeptide,Polypeptides
D001839 Bombesin A tetradecapeptide originally obtained from the skins of toads Bombina bombina and B. variegata. It is also an endogenous neurotransmitter in many animals including mammals. Bombesin affects vascular and other smooth muscle, gastric secretion, and renal circulation and function. Bombesin 14,Bombesin Dihydrochloride,Dihydrochloride, Bombesin
D005260 Female Females
D005502 Food Substances taken in by the body to provide nourishment. Foods
D005746 Gastric Emptying The evacuation of food from the stomach into the duodenum. Emptying, Gastric,Emptyings, Gastric,Gastric Emptyings
D005753 Gastric Mucosa Lining of the STOMACH, consisting of an inner EPITHELIUM, a middle LAMINA PROPRIA, and an outer MUSCULARIS MUCOSAE. The surface cells produce MUCUS that protects the stomach from attack by digestive acid and enzymes. When the epithelium invaginates into the LAMINA PROPRIA at various region of the stomach (CARDIA; GASTRIC FUNDUS; and PYLORUS), different tubular gastric glands are formed. These glands consist of cells that secrete mucus, enzymes, HYDROCHLORIC ACID, or hormones. D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
