[Lipid composition of the gonads of female Strongylocentrotus nudus sea urchins at different stages of development]. 1978

E Ia Kostetskiĭ, and N F Kushnerova, and L T Rudnikova

Changes in the content and composition of lipids in the gonads of the Strongylocentrotus nudus females during the annual cycle of their development were studied. The qualitative composition of lipids was shown not to change. There were found cerebrosides, sulfatides, free fatty acids, diphosphatidyl glycerine, phosphatidyl ethanolamine, phosphatidyl choline, phosphatidyl inositol, phosphatidyl serine, lysophosphatidyl choline, lysophosphytidyl ethanolamine, phosphatide acid, sphingomyelin and non-identified phospholipids X1 and X2 in the gonads. The relative content of individual classes of phospholipids suffers marked changes. The similarity in the content of total lipids and their individual classes at the 2nd and 5th stages confirms the existence of two generations of oocytes (Gnezdilova, 1971). The relationship between the lipid composition and the morphological state of the gonads with respect to the stage of development is discussed.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008055 Lipids A generic term for fats and lipoids, the alcohol-ether-soluble constituents of protoplasm, which are insoluble in water. They comprise the fats, fatty oils, essential oils, waxes, phospholipids, glycolipids, sulfolipids, aminolipids, chromolipids (lipochromes), and fatty acids. (Grant & Hackh's Chemical Dictionary, 5th ed) Lipid
D010507 Periodicity The tendency of a phenomenon to recur at regular intervals; in biological systems, the recurrence of certain activities (including hormonal, cellular, neural) may be annual, seasonal, monthly, daily, or more frequently (ultradian). D010743 Phospholipids Lipids containing one or more phosphate groups, particularly those derived from either glycerol (phosphoglycerides see GLYCEROPHOSPHOLIPIDS) or sphingosine (SPHINGOLIPIDS). They are polar lipids that are of great importance for the structure and function of cell membranes and are the most abundant of membrane lipids, although not stored in large amounts in the system. Phosphatides,Phospholipid
D002308 Cardiolipins Acidic phospholipids composed of two molecules of phosphatidic acid covalently linked to a molecule of glycerol. They occur primarily in mitochondrial inner membranes and in bacterial plasma membranes. They are the main antigenic components of the Wassermann-type antigen that is used in nontreponemal SYPHILIS SERODIAGNOSIS. Cardiolipin,Diphosphatidylglycerol,Diphosphatidylglycerols
D002784 Cholesterol The principal sterol of all higher animals, distributed in body tissues, especially the brain and spinal cord, and in animal fats and oils. Epicholesterol
