Long-term administration of tamoxifen (3-5 months) in a dose of 0.4 mg/kg to guinea-pigs with estrogen-induced benign uterine tumors had no toxic effects on the animals. Tamoxifen caused no noticeable changes in the ovarian mass, however, 40% of the guinea-pigs manifested ovulation suppression. Analysis of vaginal smears showed that most animals were in the stage of unestrus. Long-term administration of tamoxifen alone did not lead to the development of uterine polyps or tumors. Tamoxifen alone or combined with synestrol provoked a marked decrease in the level of free cytoplasmic estrogen and glucocorticoid receptors in the uterines of the guinea-pigs. In the course of long-term administration of tamoxifen alone, a tendency towards progesterone receptor decrease in the uterus was demonstrated.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D009929 Organ Size The measurement of an organ in volume, mass, or heaviness. Organ Volume,Organ Weight,Size, Organ,Weight, Organ
D010053 Ovary The reproductive organ (GONADS) in female animals. In vertebrates, the ovary contains two functional parts: the OVARIAN FOLLICLE for the production of female germ cells (OOGENESIS); and the endocrine cells (GRANULOSA CELLS; THECA CELLS; and LUTEAL CELLS) for the production of ESTROGENS and PROGESTERONE. Ovaries
D011987 Receptors, Steroid Proteins found usually in the cytoplasm or nucleus that specifically bind steroid hormones and trigger changes influencing the behavior of cells. The steroid receptor-steroid hormone complex regulates the transcription of specific genes. D001835 Body Weight The mass or quantity of heaviness of an individual. It is expressed by units of pounds or kilograms. Body Weights,Weight, Body,Weights, Body
D004028 Dienestrol A synthetic, non-steroidal estrogen structurally related to stilbestrol. It is used, usually as the cream, in the treatment of menopausal and postmenopausal symptoms. 4,4'-(Diethylideneethylene)diphenol,Dienestrol, (E,E)-Isomer,Dienestrol, (Z,E)-Isomer,Dienestrol, (Z,Z)-Isomer,Dienoestrol,Oestrasid,Ortho Dienestrol,Synestrol

D006168 Guinea Pigs A common name used for the genus Cavia. The most common species is Cavia porcellus which is the domesticated guinea pig used for pets and biomedical research. Cavia,Cavia porcellus,Guinea Pig,Pig, Guinea,Pigs, Guinea
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
