[Surgical management of stenosis of the trachea (author's transl)]. 1978

I Ungár

16 cases of stenosis of the trachea treated by resection and anastomosis are reported. The essential features of the technique of anaesthesia and surgery are described. It is stressed that the best results are to be obtained from end to end anastomosis. Results are analysed according to indications. In 13 cases normal function could be restored, one case improved and two remained carriers of tracheostomy canuls. 12 further cases have undergone surgery for large retrosternal thyroids causing stenosis of the trachea. Details of indications, technique and results are analysed.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007440 Intubation Introduction of a tube into a hollow organ to restore or maintain patency if obstructed. It is differentiated from CATHETERIZATION in that the insertion of a catheter is usually performed for the introducing or withdrawing of fluids from the body. Intubations
D006045 Goiter, Substernal An enlarged THYROID GLAND with at least 50% of the gland situated behind the STERNUM. It is an unusual presentation of an intrathoracic goiter. Substernal goiters frequently cause compression on the TRACHEA leading to deviation, narrowing, and respiratory symptoms. D013961 Thyroid Gland A highly vascularized endocrine gland consisting of two lobes joined by a thin band of tissue with one lobe on each side of the TRACHEA. It secretes THYROID HORMONES from the follicular cells and CALCITONIN from the parafollicular cells thereby regulating METABOLISM and CALCIUM level in blood, respectively.
