Response of ewes to a single injection of an analogue of PGF-2 alpha given at different stages of the oestrous cycle. 1980

S Acritopoulou, and W Haresign

Six groups of 4 ewes were given a single i.m. injection of 100 microgram ICI 80,996 on Days 3, 5, 8, 11, 14 or 16 of the oestrous cycle. On day 3 treatment was only partly effective in causing luteal regression, with only 2 of the 4 treated ewes returning to oestrus. Injection had no apparent effect when given on Day 16, at a time when luteal regression had already started naturally. However, treatment between Days 5 and 14 inclusive of the oestrous cycle evoked a rapid fall in progesterone concentrations to basal values of less than 0.5 ng/ml within 24 h with a high degree of synchrony in the return of oestrus (37.7 +/- 1.6 h) and the timing of the LH peak (45.3 +/- 3.2 h) after injection. We conclude that the corpus luteum of the ewe is responsive to ICI 80,996 only between Days 5 and 14 of the oestrous cycle.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007986 Luteinizing Hormone A major gonadotropin secreted by the adenohypophysis (PITUITARY GLAND, ANTERIOR). Luteinizing hormone regulates steroid production by the interstitial cells of the TESTIS and the OVARY. The preovulatory LUTEINIZING HORMONE surge in females induces OVULATION, and subsequent LUTEINIZATION of the follicle. LUTEINIZING HORMONE consists of two noncovalently linked subunits, alpha and beta. Within a species, the alpha subunit is common in the three pituitary glycoprotein hormones (TSH, LH and FSH), but the beta subunit is unique and confers its biological specificity. D011247 Pregnancy The status during which female mammals carry their developing young (EMBRYOS or FETUSES) in utero before birth, beginning from FERTILIZATION to BIRTH. Gestation,Pregnancies
D011374 Progesterone The major progestational steroid that is secreted primarily by the CORPUS LUTEUM and the PLACENTA. Progesterone acts on the UTERUS, the MAMMARY GLANDS and the BRAIN. It is required in EMBRYO IMPLANTATION; PREGNANCY maintenance, and the development of mammary tissue for MILK production. Progesterone, converted from PREGNENOLONE, also serves as an intermediate in the biosynthesis of GONADAL STEROID HORMONES and adrenal CORTICOSTEROIDS. D011461 Prostaglandins F, Synthetic Analogs or derivatives of prostaglandins F that do not occur naturally in the body. They do not include the product of the chemical synthesis of hormonal PGF. D004971 Estrus The period in the ESTROUS CYCLE associated with maximum sexual receptivity and fertility in non-primate female mammals.
D004973 Estrus Synchronization Occurrence or induction of ESTRUS in all of the females in a group at the same time, applies only to non-primate mammals with ESTROUS CYCLE. Estrus Synchronizations,Synchronization, Estrus,Synchronizations, Estrus

D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D012756 Sheep Any of the ruminant mammals with curved horns in the genus Ovis, family Bovidae. They possess lachrymal grooves and interdigital glands, which are absent in GOATS. Ovis,Sheep, Dall,Dall Sheep,Ovis dalli
