[Rheobase, pelvic score and oxytocin sensitivity test before spontaneous onset of labour (author's transl)]. 1981

W Feichtinger, and G Altmann

Electrodiagnostical investigations measuring the rheobase and chronaxy as well as Oxytocin Sensitivity Tests (OST) and estimations of the pelvic score have been carried out on 19 healthy pregnant women from the 34th week on weekly and in daily intervals 1 week before the calculated date of delivery. Generally there was no trend to a decrease of rheobase until 2 days before delivery, whereas a significant drop was found between day -2 and the day of the onset of labour. At the same time the pelvic score ascended highest, but in individual cases there was no direct correlation between pelvic score and rheobase value. The OST became positive in more than 50% before the rheobase decline. Practical aspects of the combined estimation of pelvic score, OST and rheobase are discussed especially in view of the elective induction.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007743 Labor, Obstetric The repetitive uterine contraction during childbirth which is associated with the progressive dilation of the uterine cervix (CERVIX UTERI). Successful labor results in the expulsion of the FETUS and PLACENTA. Obstetric labor can be spontaneous or induced (LABOR, INDUCED). Obstetric Labor
D007745 Labor Onset The beginning of true OBSTETRIC LABOR which is characterized by the cyclic uterine contractions of increasing frequency, duration, and strength causing CERVICAL DILATATION to begin (LABOR STAGE, FIRST ). Labor Onsets,Onset, Labor,Onsets, Labor
D010121 Oxytocin A nonapeptide hormone released from the neurohypophysis (PITUITARY GLAND, POSTERIOR). It differs from VASOPRESSIN by two amino acids at residues 3 and 8. Oxytocin acts on SMOOTH MUSCLE CELLS, such as causing UTERINE CONTRACTIONS and MILK EJECTION. Ocytocin,Pitocin,Syntocinon
D010387 Pelvimetry Measurement of the dimensions and capacity of the pelvis. It includes cephalopelvimetry (measurement of fetal head size in relation to maternal pelvic capacity), a prognostic guide to the management of LABOR, OBSTETRIC associated with disproportion. D011247 Pregnancy The status during which female mammals carry their developing young (EMBRYOS or FETUSES) in utero before birth, beginning from FERTILIZATION to BIRTH. Gestation,Pregnancies
D004558 Electric Stimulation Use of electric potential or currents to elicit biological responses. Stimulation, Electric,Electrical Stimulation,Electric Stimulations,Electrical Stimulations,Stimulation, Electrical,Stimulations, Electric,Stimulations, Electrical
D005260 Female Females
D005865 Gestational Age The age of the conceptus, beginning from the time of FERTILIZATION. In clinical obstetrics, the gestational age is often estimated from the onset of the last MENSTRUATION which is about 2 weeks before OVULATION and fertilization. It is also estimated to begin from fertilization, estrus, coitus, or artificial insemination.
