Modification of lymphocyte response to phytomitogens by polycations and polyanions. 1978

B Larsen, and I Heron

The stimulating effect on mitogen-induced lymphocyte response by polycationic compounds such as polylysine, DEAE dextran protamine and methylated albumin, is studied at different serum-protein concentrations and mitogen concentrations. It is suggested that the polar interaction between polycationic compounds and glycoproteins are of major importance for reactivity of lymphocytes to mitogens.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008213 Lymphocyte Activation Morphologic alteration of small B LYMPHOCYTES or T LYMPHOCYTES in culture into large blast-like cells able to synthesize DNA and RNA and to divide mitotically. It is induced by INTERLEUKINS; MITOGENS such as PHYTOHEMAGGLUTININS, and by specific ANTIGENS. It may also occur in vivo as in GRAFT REJECTION. D011107 Polylysine A peptide which is a homopolymer of lysine. Epsilon-Polylysine,Poly-(Alpha-L-Lysine),Epsilon Polylysine
D011479 Protamines A group of simple proteins that yield basic amino acids on hydrolysis and that occur combined with nucleic acid in the sperm of fish. Protamines contain very few kinds of amino acids. Protamine sulfate combines with heparin to form a stable inactive complex; it is used to neutralize the anticoagulant action of heparin in the treatment of heparin overdose. D002809 Chondroitin Sulfates Derivatives of chondroitin which have a sulfate moiety esterified to the galactosamine moiety of chondroitin. Chondroitin sulfate A, or chondroitin 4-sulfate, and chondroitin sulfate C, or chondroitin 6-sulfate, have the sulfate esterified in the 4- and 6-positions, respectively. Chondroitin sulfate B (beta heparin; DERMATAN SULFATE) is a misnomer and this compound is not a true chondroitin sulfate.
