[Pathogenetic and morphological aspects of sudden cardiac death]. 1981

A I Strukov, and L V Kakturskiĭ, and T N Kop'eva, and A V Svishchev

The epidemiology, risk factors, pathological anatomy, and pathogenesis of sudden cardiac death are characterized on the grounds of literature data and the results of the authors own study. The main attention was focused on sudden death in ischemic heart disease. Information on acute and chronic morphological changes in the coronary arteries of the heart, the myocardium, and the conducting system is given. The pathogenic importance of myocardial ischemia, local metabolic damages, and microcirculatory disorders in the heart muscle is discussed. It is indicated that the principal role in thanatogenesis is played by the electrical instability of the myocardium and disorders of cardiac rhythm caused to a definite measure by the structural and functional changes in the conducting system of the heart.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008297 Male Males
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D009206 Myocardium The muscle tissue of the HEART. It is composed of striated, involuntary muscle cells (MYOCYTES, CARDIAC) connected to form the contractile pump to generate blood flow. D003327 Coronary Disease An imbalance between myocardial functional requirements and the capacity of the CORONARY VESSELS to supply sufficient blood flow. It is a form of MYOCARDIAL ISCHEMIA (insufficient blood supply to the heart muscle) caused by a decreased capacity of the coronary vessels. D003645 Death, Sudden The abrupt cessation of all vital bodily functions, manifested by the permanent loss of total cerebral, respiratory, and cardiovascular functions. Sudden Death
D005260 Female Females
D006323 Heart Arrest Cessation of heart beat or MYOCARDIAL CONTRACTION. If it is treated within a few minutes, heart arrest can be reversed in most cases to normal cardiac rhythm and effective circulation.
