The introduction of the non-ionogenic product metrizamide made lumbosacral myelography a low-risk, invasive diagnostic procedure. Examination carried out on an outpatient basis does not involve greater risks or side effects than examination on an inpatient basis. However, it is essential that--apart from informing the patient properly--the patient shows discipline and remains available for the examining physician during a period of 36 hours.
