The technique of intubation of the lacrimal system is described. A silicone tube with stainless steel probes on either end is used. Special emphasis is placed on management of difficulties in finding the probe in the nose and guiding it with a lacrimal groove director.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007440 Intubation Introduction of a tube into a hollow organ to restore or maintain patency if obstructed. It is differentiated from CATHETERIZATION in that the insertion of a catheter is usually performed for the introducing or withdrawing of fluids from the body. Intubations
D007767 Lacrimal Duct Obstruction Interference with the secretion of tears by the lacrimal glands. Obstruction of the LACRIMAL SAC or NASOLACRIMAL DUCT causing acute or chronic inflammation of the lacrimal sac (DACRYOCYSTITIS). It is caused also in infants by failure of the nasolacrimal duct to open into the inferior meatus and occurs about the third week of life. In adults occlusion may occur spontaneously or after injury or nasal disease. D012826 Silicone Elastomers Polymers of silicone that are formed by crosslinking and treatment with amorphous silica to increase strength. They have properties similar to vulcanized natural rubber, in that they stretch under tension, retract rapidly, and fully recover to their original dimensions upon release. They are used in the encapsulation of surgical membranes and implants. Elastomers, Silicone,Rubber Silicone,Silicone Rubber,Elastosil,Microfil,SE-30,Elastosils,Microfils,SE 30,SE30,Silicone Elastomer
