[Kaposi's sarcoma during local and general steroid therapy for psoriasis (author's transl)]. 1981

J Meynadier, and J J Guilhou, and J L Peyron, and B Guillot

The authors describe a new case of Kaposi's sarcoma associated with psoriasis. The patient (a 68-year-old Nord-African man) had suffered from psoriasis for 14 years and had applied local betamethasone or fluocinolone for 125 months when Kaposi's sarcoma occurred. The association between these two diseases is discussed. The role of local steroid therapy and the immunological abnormality occurring in psoriasis are analyzed in order to explain the association between psoriasis and Kaposi's sarcoma or other malignant diseases.

D011565 Psoriasis A common genetically determined, chronic, inflammatory skin disease characterized by rounded erythematous, dry, scaling patches. D005446 Fluocinolone Acetonide A glucocorticoid derivative used topically in the treatment of various skin disorders. It is usually employed as a cream, gel, lotion, or ointment. It has also been used topically in the treatment of inflammatory eye, ear, and nose disorders. D000368 Aged A person 65 years of age or older. For a person older than 79 years, AGED, 80 AND OVER is available. Elderly
D001623 Betamethasone A glucocorticoid given orally, parenterally, by local injection, by inhalation, or applied topically in the management of various disorders in which corticosteroids are indicated. Its lack of mineralocorticoid properties makes betamethasone particularly suitable for treating cerebral edema and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p724) Betadexamethasone,Flubenisolone,Celeston,Celestona,Celestone,Cellestoderm
D012514 Sarcoma, Kaposi A multicentric, malignant neoplastic vascular proliferation characterized by the development of bluish-red cutaneous nodules, usually on the lower extremities, most often on the toes or feet, and slowly increasing in size and number and spreading to more proximal areas. The tumors have endothelium-lined channels and vascular spaces admixed with variably sized aggregates of spindle-shaped cells, and often remain confined to the skin and subcutaneous tissue, but widespread visceral involvement may occur. Kaposi's sarcoma occurs spontaneously in Jewish and Italian males in Europe and the United States. An aggressive variant in young children is endemic in some areas of Africa. A third form occurs in about 0.04% of kidney transplant patients. There is also a high incidence in AIDS patients. (From Dorland, 27th ed & Holland et al., Cancer Medicine, 3d ed, pp2105-7) HHV-8 is the suspected cause.
