[The "typical senile cataract" examined under the scanning electron microscope (author's transl)]. 1981

H Conrads, and R Blaschke, and U Krug

Lenses suffering from "typical senile cataract" prepared by "critical point drying"and by sprinkling with gold, were examined under the scanning electron microscope. The images thus obtained gave a three-dimensional representation of structural changes within the lens determined in histological investigations performed with the light microscope.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007908 Lens, Crystalline A transparent, biconvex structure of the EYE, enclosed in a capsule and situated behind the IRIS and in front of the vitreous humor (VITREOUS BODY). It is slightly overlapped at its margin by the ciliary processes. Adaptation by the CILIARY BODY is crucial for OCULAR ACCOMMODATION. Eye Lens,Lens, Eye,Crystalline Lens
D008855 Microscopy, Electron, Scanning Microscopy in which the object is examined directly by an electron beam scanning the specimen point-by-point. The image is constructed by detecting the products of specimen interactions that are projected above the plane of the sample, such as backscattered electrons. Although SCANNING TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY also scans the specimen point by point with the electron beam, the image is constructed by detecting the electrons, or their interaction products that are transmitted through the sample plane, so that is a form of TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY. D002386 Cataract Partial or complete opacity on or in the lens or capsule of one or both eyes, impairing vision or causing blindness. The many kinds of cataract are classified by their morphology (size, shape, location) or etiology (cause and time of occurrence). D014617 Vacuoles Any spaces or cavities within a cell. They may function in digestion, storage, secretion, or excretion. Vacuole
