[Cholesterol biosynthesis in the blood of rabbits with experimental atherosclerosis]. 1978

V N Mironova, and P P Chaialo

Blood of normal rabbits and those on atherogenic cholesterol diet was incubated with 2--14C-acetate of sodium. After incubation cholesterol and its precursors -- squalene and lanosterin -- were found and identified in the non-saponified fractions of leukocytes and platelets. The maximum specific activity was revealed in cholesterol, next in turn were lanosterin and squalene of leukocytes both in the normal rabbits and in those with atherosclerosis. In platelets the label was mainly accumulated in lanosterin.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007810 Lanosterol A triterpene that derives from the chair-boat-chair-boat folding of 2,3-oxidosqualene. It is metabolized to CHOLESTEROL and CUCURBITACINS. Kryptosterol,4,4,14 alpha-trimethyl-5 alpha-cholesta-8,24-dien-3 beta-ol
D007962 Leukocytes White blood cells. These include granular leukocytes (BASOPHILS; EOSINOPHILS; and NEUTROPHILS) as well as non-granular leukocytes (LYMPHOCYTES and MONOCYTES). D011817 Rabbits A burrowing plant-eating mammal with hind limbs that are longer than its fore limbs. It belongs to the family Leporidae of the order Lagomorpha, and in contrast to hares, possesses 22 instead of 24 pairs of chromosomes. D002784 Cholesterol The principal sterol of all higher animals, distributed in body tissues, especially the brain and spinal cord, and in animal fats and oils. Epicholesterol
D000085 Acetates Derivatives of ACETIC ACID. Included under this heading are a broad variety of acid forms, salts, esters, and amides that contain the carboxymethane structure. Acetate,Acetic Acid Esters,Acetic Acids,Acids, Acetic,Esters, Acetic Acid
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D001161 Arteriosclerosis Thickening and loss of elasticity of the walls of ARTERIES of all sizes. There are many forms classified by the types of lesions and arteries involved, such as ATHEROSCLEROSIS with fatty lesions in the ARTERIAL INTIMA of medium and large muscular arteries. Arterioscleroses
D013185 Squalene A natural 30-carbon triterpene.
