[Development of early kidney lesions in genetically hypertensive, normotensive and hypotensive rats]. 1980

N Blanc-Brunat, and M Vincent, and J Sassard

Morphological changes were studied in 3 different strains of rats genetically hypertensive (LH) normotensive (LN), or with low blood pressure (LL). Renal lesions were evaluated at 3, 5, 9, and 21 weeks of age, when blood pressure was significantly different between the 3 groups and the difference increased up to 21 weeks of age. Small histological changes could be detected in the LH groups as early as the fifth week (2 cases out of 8). However the differences between hypertensive rats and normo or hypotensive rats were obvious only at 9 weeks progressively increasing up to the 21th week. The juxta glomerular apparatus was mainly affected with hypertrophy and hyalinisation and hyaline deposits within the wall of the afferent arteriole and lacis cells. The lesions were constant although focal and of moderate intensity. They were frequently associated with segmental hyalinisation of the glomerulus and slight tubular and interstitial changes. The comparative study between three strains of rats shows that the renal vascular lesions appear early but after the onset of hypertension.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D006973 Hypertension Persistently high systemic arterial BLOOD PRESSURE. Based on multiple readings (BLOOD PRESSURE DETERMINATION), hypertension is currently defined as when SYSTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently greater than 140 mm Hg or when DIASTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently 90 mm Hg or more. Blood Pressure, High,Blood Pressures, High,High Blood Pressure,High Blood Pressures
D007022 Hypotension Abnormally low BLOOD PRESSURE that can result in inadequate blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. Common symptom is DIZZINESS but greater negative impacts on the body occur when there is prolonged depravation of oxygen and nutrients. Blood Pressure, Low,Hypotension, Vascular,Low Blood Pressure,Vascular Hypotension
D007668 Kidney Body organ that filters blood for the secretion of URINE and that regulates ion concentrations. Kidneys
D011919 Rats, Inbred Strains Genetically identical individuals developed from brother and sister matings which have been carried out for twenty or more generations or by parent x offspring matings carried out with certain restrictions. This also includes animals with a long history of closed colony breeding. D000375 Aging The gradual irreversible changes in structure and function of an organism that occur as a result of the passage of time. Senescence,Aging, Biological,Biological Aging
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
