Bow hunter's stroke. 1978

B F Sorensen

A case of suspected brain stem infarction (modified Wallenberg syndrome) due to vertebral artery injury in a bow hunter is presented. An anatomical review is presented to explain the neurological involvement, and recommendations are given for avoiding this syndrome.

Thrombosis may occur in arterial or venous structures. Brain Embolism and Thrombosis,Cerebral Embolism and Thrombosis,Embolism and Thrombosis, Brain
D002561 Cerebrovascular Disorders A spectrum of pathological conditions of impaired blood flow in the brain. They can involve vessels (ARTERIES or VEINS) in the CEREBRUM, the CEREBELLUM, and the BRAIN STEM. Major categories include INTRACRANIAL ARTERIOVENOUS MALFORMATIONS; BRAIN ISCHEMIA; CEREBRAL HEMORRHAGE; and others. D014854 Lateral Medullary Syndrome INFARCTION of the dorsolateral aspect of MEDULLA OBLONGATA in the BRAIN STEM. It is caused by occlusion of the VERTEBRAL ARTERY and/or the posterior inferior cerebellar artery. Clinical manifestations vary with the size of infarction, but may include loss of pain and temperature sensation in the ipsilateral face and contralateral body below the chin; ipsilateral HORNER SYNDROME; ipsilateral ATAXIA; DYSARTHRIA; VERTIGO; nausea, hiccup; dysphagia; and VOCAL CORD PARALYSIS.
