Correlation between plasma sodium acetate concentration and systemic vascular resistances. 1981

D C Schohn, and S Klein, and Y Mitsuishi, and H A Jahn

Acetate in dialysis fluid induces during haemodialysis a fall in systemic vascular resistance. In patients with hepatic insufficiency, acetate concentrations are higher than in patients without hepatic insufficiency and in such patients vascular sensitivity to acetate is perhaps potentiated by modifications of acid base status. The close inverse correlations between acetate concentrations and systemic vascular resistance are strong indications that acetate is a major factor involved in the genesis of 'dialysis hypotension'.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007676 Kidney Failure, Chronic The end-stage of CHRONIC RENAL INSUFFICIENCY. It is characterized by the severe irreversible kidney damage (as measured by the level of PROTEINURIA) and the reduction in GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE to less than 15 ml per min (Kidney Foundation: Kidney Disease Outcome Quality Initiative, 2002). These patients generally require HEMODIALYSIS or KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION. D000085 Acetates Derivatives of ACETIC ACID. Included under this heading are a broad variety of acid forms, salts, esters, and amides that contain the carboxymethane structure. Acetate,Acetic Acid Esters,Acetic Acids,Acids, Acetic,Esters, Acetic Acid
D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
D001639 Bicarbonates Inorganic salts that contain the -HCO3 radical. They are an important factor in determining the pH of the blood and the concentration of bicarbonate ions is regulated by the kidney. Levels in the blood are an index of the alkali reserve or buffering capacity.
