[Steroid receptors in human pathology. Foreword (author's transl)]. 1981

H Rochefort

After definition of the steroid receptor concept, the different steps of steroid hormone action in the target cell which precede and succeed to the binding of hormone to its receptor are discussed. The different medical applications of steroid hormone receptors are then briefly reviewed such as the assay of steroid receptors in hormone dependant cancer, the understanding of receptor diseases and of antihormones, action, radio-imaging, radio-receptor assay and specific killing of cancer cells containing high level of receptors with bifunctional agents.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D009369 Neoplasms New abnormal growth of tissue. Malignant neoplasms show a greater degree of anaplasia and have the properties of invasion and metastasis, compared to benign neoplasms. D011987 Receptors, Steroid Proteins found usually in the cytoplasm or nucleus that specifically bind steroid hormones and trigger changes influencing the behavior of cells. The steroid receptor-steroid hormone complex regulates the transcription of specific genes. D004194 Disease A definite pathologic process with a characteristic set of signs and symptoms. It may affect the whole body or any of its parts, and its etiology, pathology, and prognosis may be known or unknown. Diseases
D006728 Hormones Chemical substances having a specific regulatory effect on the activity of a certain organ or organs. The term was originally applied to substances secreted by various ENDOCRINE GLANDS and transported in the bloodstream to the target organs. It is sometimes extended to include those substances that are not produced by the endocrine glands but that have similar effects.
