There is an increasing interpersonal distance between doctors and patients which is adversely affecting the quality of medical care. Solutions to the problem have been sought in the training of doctors, but these may not be effective until it is possible to undertake some mutual education of doctors and patients. Ways in which this could be done are discussed.
