A method for estimating the age of field-collected female Simulium damnosum s.l. (Diptera: Simuliidae). 1980

J E Mokry

A technique was developed for estimating the relative age of field-collected females of the Simulium damnosum complex. Females were allowed the opportunity to blood-feed while attacking and held 48 hours to permit partial maturation of the ovaries. The ovaries were then dissected out and the number of maturing oocytes was counted. Nullipars were easily identified by their lack of follicular relics. The remaining parous females generally fell into one of four groups depending on their egg counts. Wihout a laboratory colony for specific reference it is presently impossible to confirm that the fecundity groups represent successive gonotrophic cycles. Nevertheless, there is little doubt that the data demonstrate a decreasing level of fecundity in flies of advancing age thus allowing direct comparisons to be made between different populations. The epidemiological significance of this is discussed.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D009865 Oocytes Female germ cells derived from OOGONIA and termed OOCYTES when they enter MEIOSIS. The primary oocytes begin meiosis but are arrested at the diplotene state until OVULATION at PUBERTY to give rise to haploid secondary oocytes or ova (OVUM). Ovocytes,Oocyte,Ovocyte
D004175 Diptera An order of the class Insecta. Wings, when present, number two and distinguish Diptera from other so-called flies, while the halteres, or reduced hindwings, separate Diptera from other insects with one pair of wings. The order includes the families Calliphoridae, Oestridae, Phoridae, SARCOPHAGIDAE, Scatophagidae, Sciaridae, SIMULIIDAE, Tabanidae, Therevidae, Trypetidae, CERATOPOGONIDAE; CHIRONOMIDAE; CULICIDAE; DROSOPHILIDAE; GLOSSINIDAE; MUSCIDAE; TEPHRITIDAE; and PSYCHODIDAE. The larval form of Diptera species are called maggots (see LARVA). Flies, True,Flies,Dipteras,Fly,Fly, True,True Flies,True Fly
D004772 Entomology A discipline or occupation concerned with the study of INSECTS, including the biology and the control of insects.
D005260 Female Females
D005298 Fertility The capacity to conceive or to induce conception. It may refer to either the male or female. D000354 Africa, Western The geographical area of Africa comprising BENIN; BURKINA FASO; CABO VERDE, COTE D'IVOIRE (formerly Ivory Coast); GAMBIA; GHANA; GUINEA; GUINEA-BISSAU; LIBERIA; MALI; MAURITANIA; NIGER; NIGERIA; SENEGAL; SIERRA LEONE; and TOGO. Africa, West,West Africa,Western Africa
D000375 Aging The gradual irreversible changes in structure and function of an organism that occur as a result of the passage of time. Senescence,Aging, Biological,Biological Aging
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. Animal,Metazoa,Animalia
D014921 Wings, Animal Movable feathered or membranous paired appendages by means of which certain animals such as birds, bats, or insects are able to fly. Animal Wing,Animal Wings,Wing, Animal
