Half-life of angiotensin II in the conscious and barbiturate-anaesthetized rat. 1980

B J Chapman, and D P Brooks, and K A Munday

The half-life (T 1/2) of angiotensin II was measured in rats with chronic indwelling catheters. In conscious animals T 1/2 was 14.8 +/- 2.5 s; during anaesthesia T 1/2 increased by 60%. Anaesthesia decreased the control arterial pressure, but did not alter the sensitivity to injected angiotensin II. The causes and consequences of this change in angiotensin catabolism are discussed.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007700 Kinetics The rate dynamics in chemical or physical systems.
D010424 Pentobarbital A short-acting barbiturate that is effective as a sedative and hypnotic (but not as an anti-anxiety) agent and is usually given orally. It is prescribed more frequently for sleep induction than for sedation but, like similar agents, may lose its effectiveness by the second week of continued administration. D006207 Half-Life The time it takes for a substance (drug, radioactive nuclide, or other) to lose half of its pharmacologic, physiologic, or radiologic activity. Halflife,Half Life,Half-Lifes,Halflifes
D000768 Anesthesia, General Procedure in which patients are induced into an unconscious state through use of various medications so that they do not feel pain during surgery. Anesthesias, General,General Anesthesia,General Anesthesias
D000804 Angiotensin II An octapeptide that is a potent but labile vasoconstrictor. It is produced from angiotensin I after the removal of two amino acids at the C-terminal by ANGIOTENSIN CONVERTING ENZYME. The amino acid in position 5 varies in different species. To block VASOCONSTRICTION and HYPERTENSION effect of angiotensin II, patients are often treated with ACE INHIBITORS or with ANGIOTENSIN II TYPE 1 RECEPTOR BLOCKERS. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
