Histochemical analysis of mucosubstances of the ventral marginal folds of mantle in Lamellidens consobrinus (Lea). 1980

S Y Mane, and V Y Patil

The results of the various histochemical reactions on the mucosubstances in sections fixed in calcium acetate formol indicate on the presence of mucous cells only in the inner and middle marginal folds of the mantle edge. The mucous cells secreting neutral mucosubstances are located only in the middle fold, sulfomucin secreting cells in the inner fold. The mucous cells also contain protein. The mucous cells secreting sulfated acid mucosubstances displayed negative reaction with PAS only after pepsin digestion. It is suggested that the mucous cells play some role in shell formation.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007413 Intestinal Mucosa Lining of the INTESTINES, consisting of an inner EPITHELIUM, a middle LAMINA PROPRIA, and an outer MUSCULARIS MUCOSAE. In the SMALL INTESTINE, the mucosa is characterized by a series of folds and abundance of absorptive cells (ENTEROCYTES) with MICROVILLI. D009077 Mucins High molecular weight mucoproteins that protect the surface of EPITHELIAL CELLS by providing a barrier to particulate matter and microorganisms. Membrane-anchored mucins may have additional roles concerned with protein interactions at the cell surface. Mucin
D010503 Periodic Acid-Schiff Reaction A histochemical technique for staining carbohydrates. It is based on PERIODIC ACID oxidation of a substance containing adjacent hydroxyl groups. The resulting aldehydes react with Schiff reagent to form a colored product. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D049872 Bivalvia A class in the phylum MOLLUSCA comprised of mussels; clams; OYSTERS; COCKLES; and SCALLOPS. They are characterized by a bilaterally symmetrical hinged shell and a muscular foot used for burrowing and anchoring. Mussels,Bivalves,Clams,Bivalve,Bivalvias,Clam,Mussel
