Ultrasonography and computed tomography of peritoneal mesothelioma. 1980

H C Yeh, and A P Chahinian

Eleven patients with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma were examined with ultrasonography. Four of them were also examined with computed tomography (CT). A sheetlike mass was seen in seven patients and a localized irregular mass was seen in four. No nodular or globular masses were seen. Ascites was present in all patients except one, and an omental mass in addition to a peritoneal mass was found in two. Extremely rapid progression of mesothelioma occurred in one patient, and disappearance of mesothelioma and ascites occurred in another. Ultrasonography was, in general, superior to CT in demonstrating peritoneal masses, especially in the presence of ascites.

D008654 Mesothelioma A tumor derived from mesothelial tissue (peritoneum, pleura, pericardium). It appears as broad sheets of cells, with some regions containing spindle-shaped, sarcoma-like cells and other regions showing adenomatous patterns. Pleural mesotheliomas have been linked to exposure to asbestos. (Dorland, 27th ed) Mesotheliomas

D010537 Peritoneum A membrane of squamous EPITHELIAL CELLS, the mesothelial cells, covered by apical MICROVILLI that allow rapid absorption of fluid and particles in the PERITONEAL CAVITY. The peritoneum is divided into parietal and visceral components. The parietal peritoneum covers the inside of the ABDOMINAL WALL. The visceral peritoneum covers the intraperitoneal organs. The double-layered peritoneum forms the MESENTERY that suspends these organs from the abdominal wall.
