Fibrinogen degradation products in pleural effusions. 1980

O G Raja, and I F Casson

This study investigates the diagnostic value of fibrinogen degradation products (FDP) in pleural fluid and serum. Thirty patients with pleural effusions due to a variety of causes were investigated. The concentration of FDP in pleural fluid was significantly higher in patients with malignancy, infection and pulmonary embolus than in patients with congestive cardiac failure. The concentration of FDP in serum was not significantly different between any of the groups. We conclude that estimation of the concentration of FDP in pleural fluid, a simple biochemical procedure, has some value in differential diagnosis of pleural effusion and complements existing tests.

D010996 Pleural Effusion Presence of fluid in the pleural cavity resulting from excessive transudation or exudation from the pleural surfaces. It is a sign of disease and not a diagnosis in itself. Effusion, Pleural,Effusions, Pleural,Pleural Effusions
D011655 Pulmonary Embolism Blocking of the PULMONARY ARTERY or one of its branches by an EMBOLUS. Pulmonary Thromboembolism,Thromboembolism, Pulmonary,Embolism, Pulmonary,Embolisms, Pulmonary,Pulmonary Embolisms,Pulmonary Thromboembolisms,Thromboembolisms, Pulmonary
D003937 Diagnosis, Differential Determination of which one of two or more diseases or conditions a patient is suffering from by systematically comparing and contrasting results of diagnostic measures. Diagnoses, Differential,Differential Diagnoses,Differential Diagnosis
D005338 Fibrin Fibrinogen Degradation Products Soluble protein fragments formed by the proteolytic action of plasmin on fibrin or fibrinogen. FDP and their complexes profoundly impair the hemostatic process and are a major cause of hemorrhage in intravascular coagulation and fibrinolysis. D006333 Heart Failure A heterogeneous condition in which the heart is unable to pump out sufficient blood to meet the metabolic need of the body. Heart failure can be caused by structural defects, functional abnormalities (VENTRICULAR DYSFUNCTION), or a sudden overload beyond its capacity. Chronic heart failure is more common than acute heart failure which results from sudden insult to cardiac function, such as MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION.
