Interferon induction and action in human lymphoblastoid cells infected with measles virus. 1978

G Volckaert-Vervliet, and H Heremans, and M De Ley, and A Billiau

Virus replication, cytopathic effect and interferon production were measured in Namalva lymphoblastoid cells infected with measles viruses. Eight virus strains of different origin or passage history were compared. An inverse relationship seemed to exist between the abilities of strains to induce interferon and to replicate to high titres. Two representative strains were found to be highly sensitive to lymphoblastoid cell interferon, when tested in a line of monkey kidney cells (Vero). In contrast, Namalva cells were found to be highly insensitive to autologous interferon when challenged with measles or Semliki Forest virus (SFV).

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007372 Interferons Proteins secreted by vertebrate cells in response to a wide variety of inducers. They confer resistance against many different viruses, inhibit proliferation of normal and malignant cells, impede multiplication of intracellular parasites, enhance macrophage and granulocyte phagocytosis, augment natural killer cell activity, and show several other immunomodulatory functions. Interferon
D008221 Lymphoid Tissue Specialized tissues that are components of the lymphatic system. They provide fixed locations within the body where a variety of LYMPHOCYTES can form, mature and multiply. The lymphoid tissues are connected by a network of LYMPHATIC VESSELS. Lymphatic Tissue,Lymphatic Tissues,Lymphoid Tissues,Tissue, Lymphatic,Tissue, Lymphoid,Tissues, Lymphatic,Tissues, Lymphoid
D008459 Measles virus The type species of MORBILLIVIRUS and the cause of the highly infectious human disease MEASLES, which affects mostly children. Edmonston virus
D002460 Cell Line Established cell cultures that have the potential to propagate indefinitely. Cell Lines,Line, Cell,Lines, Cell
D003588 Cytopathogenic Effect, Viral Visible morphologic changes in cells infected with viruses. It includes shutdown of cellular RNA and protein synthesis, cell fusion, release of lysosomal enzymes, changes in cell membrane permeability, diffuse changes in intracellular structures, presence of viral inclusion bodies, and chromosomal aberrations. It excludes malignant transformation, which is CELL TRANSFORMATION, VIRAL. Viral cytopathogenic effects provide a valuable method for identifying and classifying the infecting viruses. D014779 Virus Replication The process of intracellular viral multiplication, consisting of the synthesis of PROTEINS; NUCLEIC ACIDS; and sometimes LIPIDS, and their assembly into a new infectious particle.
