[Correlations between clinical features and metabolic disorders in anorexia nervosa]. 1980

M V Korkina, and V V Marilov

The metabolic indices of cholesterol, Na, K, Ca and chlorides in the plasma of two groups of patients with different variants of anorexia nervosa were compared. The first group consisted of 30 subjects on a markedly food intake, containing lipids and carbohydrates, and the second one 20 patients with artificially induced vomiting, following each food intake. The study demonstrated that in the so-called vomiting behavior, all the indices of the above mentioned metabolites were lower than in normals (especially the level of chlorides and Na). A comparison of these groups demonstrated a statistically significant drop in the content of cholesterol, K, Ca and chlorides in patients with artificially induced vomiting in comparison with patients on food limitation. The results obtained are of significance for elaborating adequate dietetics within the framework of a comprehensive therapy of patients with anorexia nervosa.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D011188 Potassium An element in the alkali group of metals with an atomic symbol K, atomic number 19, and atomic weight 39.10. It is the chief cation in the intracellular fluid of muscle and other cells. Potassium ion is a strong electrolyte that plays a significant role in the regulation of fluid volume and maintenance of the WATER-ELECTROLYTE BALANCE.
D002118 Calcium A basic element found in nearly all tissues. It is a member of the alkaline earth family of metals with the atomic symbol Ca, atomic number 20, and atomic weight 40. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and combines with phosphorus to form calcium phosphate in the bones and teeth. It is essential for the normal functioning of nerves and muscles and plays a role in blood coagulation (as factor IV) and in many enzymatic processes. D002712 Chlorides Inorganic compounds derived from hydrochloric acid that contain the Cl- ion. Chloride,Chloride Ion Level,Ion Level, Chloride,Level, Chloride Ion
D002784 Cholesterol The principal sterol of all higher animals, distributed in body tissues, especially the brain and spinal cord, and in animal fats and oils. Epicholesterol
D004032 Diet Regular course of eating and drinking adopted by a person or animal. Diets
D004573 Electrolytes Substances that dissociate into two or more ions, to some extent, in water. Solutions of electrolytes thus conduct an electric current and can be decomposed by it (ELECTROLYSIS). (Grant & Hackh's Chemical Dictionary, 5th ed) Electrolyte
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man

D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
D000856 Anorexia Nervosa An eating disorder that is characterized by the lack or loss of APPETITE, known as ANOREXIA. Other features include excess fear of becoming OVERWEIGHT; BODY IMAGE disturbance; significant WEIGHT LOSS; refusal to maintain minimal normal weight; and AMENORRHEA. This disorder occurs most frequently in adolescent females. (APA, Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms, 1994) Anorexia Nervosas,Nervosa, Anorexia,Nervosas, Anorexia
