Creatine phosphokinase elevations and psychiatric symptomatology. 1980

J R Taylor, and L Abichandani

The authors retrospectively studied 322 patient-admissions to the ward service of a psychiatric hospital for the period of 1 year. Twenty-five acutely psychotic patients were found who had unexplained elevations of serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK); 14 of the 25, (56%) had either a research or a clinical diagnosis of primary affective disorder, bipolar type (mania). Similar findings of CPK elevations and acute psychosis by other authors are described.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008297 Male Males
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D003402 Creatine Kinase A transferase that catalyzes formation of PHOSPHOCREATINE from ATP + CREATINE. The reaction stores ATP energy as phosphocreatine. Three cytoplasmic ISOENZYMES have been identified in human tissues: the MM type from SKELETAL MUSCLE, the MB type from myocardial tissue and the BB type from nervous tissue as well as a mitochondrial isoenzyme. Macro-creatine kinase refers to creatine kinase complexed with other serum proteins. D012189 Retrospective Studies Studies used to test etiologic hypotheses in which inferences about an exposure to putative causal factors are derived from data relating to characteristics of persons under study or to events or experiences in their past. The essential feature is that some of the persons under study have the disease or outcome of interest and their characteristics are compared with those of unaffected persons.
