Axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase: a new method for tracing nervous control of the bladder. 1978

N S Kokotas, and R A Schmidt, and E A Tanagho

A new method for tracing the nervous control of the bladder is described. A protein substance, horseradish peroxidase, has been shown to be absorbed and transported by nerve fibers. The substance was injected into the bladder neck region of a series of dogs. After uptake by motor neurons the horseradish was carried to the spinal cord segment controlling micturition. Implications regarding the neurophysiology of the urinary tract are discussed.

D004285 Dogs The domestic dog, Canis familiaris, comprising about 400 breeds, of the carnivore family CANIDAE. They are worldwide in distribution and live in association with people. (Walker's Mammals of the World, 5th ed, p1065) Canis familiaris,Dog
D006735 Horseradish Peroxidase An enzyme isolated from horseradish which is able to act as an antigen. It is frequently used as a histochemical tracer for light and electron microscopy. Its antigenicity has permitted its use as a combined antigen and marker in experimental immunology. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
