The supporting structures of the knee can be divided into several layers: fascial boundaries, the collateral ligaments and tendons, and the joint capsule. MR imaging's ability to demonstrate these findings has helped to validate this anatomic concept. An appreciation for the organization of the medial and lateral compartments facilitates MR imaging interpretation.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007592 Joint Diseases Diseases involving the JOINTS. Arthropathies,Arthropathy,Joint Disease
D007718 Knee Injuries Injuries to the knee or the knee joint. Injuries, Knee,Injury, Knee,Knee Injury
D007719 Knee Joint A synovial hinge connection formed between the bones of the FEMUR; TIBIA; and PATELLA. Superior Tibiofibular Joint,Joint, Knee,Joint, Superior Tibiofibular,Knee Joints,Superior Tibiofibular Joints,Tibiofibular Joint, Superior
D008023 Ligaments, Articular Fibrous cords of CONNECTIVE TISSUE that attach bones to each other and hold together the many types of joints in the body. Articular ligaments are strong, elastic, and allow movement in only specific directions, depending on the individual joint. Articular Ligament,Articular Ligaments,Ligament, Articular
D008279 Magnetic Resonance Imaging Non-invasive method of demonstrating internal anatomy based on the principle that atomic nuclei in a strong magnetic field absorb pulses of radiofrequency energy and emit them as radiowaves which can be reconstructed into computerized images. The concept includes proton spin tomographic techniques. D005205 Fascia Layers of connective tissue of variable thickness. The superficial fascia is found immediately below the skin; the deep fascia invests MUSCLES, nerves, and other organs.
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D013710 Tendons Fibrous bands or cords of CONNECTIVE TISSUE at the ends of SKELETAL MUSCLE FIBERS that serve to attach the MUSCLES to bones and other structures. D017885 Collateral Ligaments A number of ligaments on either side of, and serving as a radius of movement of, a joint having a hingelike movement. They occur at the elbow, knee, wrist, metacarpo- and metatarsophalangeal, proximal interphalangeal, and distal interphalangeal joints of the hands and feet.
