Effect of mild hypovolemia and fluid replacement on regional oxygenation, flow, and small vessel blood content in the rabbit heart. 1978

H R Weiss, and J J Bailin, and P J Levy

A study was conducted on the effects of mild hemorrhage-induced hypovolemia and subsequent fluid replacement with lactated Ringer's or dextran solution on the hearts of 61 pentobarbital anethetized open-chest New Zealand white rabbits. After a blood loss equivalent to 1.25% of body weight, blood flow in the subepicardial and subendocardial regions of the left ventricular free wall was unaffected, relative tissue PO2 fell, and small vessel blood content, a measure of open capillary density, increased. No regional differences were seen after one hour. With fluid replacement, small vessel blood content returned toward control; coronary blood flow and myocardial relative tissue PO2 were unaltered. These results are best explained by an increased myocardial metabolism and a loss of blood oxygenation in hypovolemia and a return of metabolism toward control with fluid replacement. The lack of regional effects indicated that the subendocardium was no more adversely affected than the subepicardium during the experimentally induced mild hypovolemia.

D009206 Myocardium The muscle tissue of the HEART. It is composed of striated, involuntary muscle cells (MYOCYTES, CARDIAC) connected to form the contractile pump to generate blood flow. D010101 Oxygen Consumption The rate at which oxygen is used by a tissue; microliters of oxygen STPD used per milligram of tissue per hour; the rate at which oxygen enters the blood from alveolar gas, equal in the steady state to the consumption of oxygen by tissue metabolism throughout the body. D010952 Plasma Substitutes Any liquid used to replace blood plasma, usually a saline solution, often with serum albumins, dextrans or other preparations. These substances do not enhance the oxygen- carrying capacity of blood, but merely replace the volume. They are also used to treat dehydration. D011817 Rabbits A burrowing plant-eating mammal with hind limbs that are longer than its fore limbs. It belongs to the family Leporidae of the order Lagomorpha, and in contrast to hares, possesses 22 instead of 24 pairs of chromosomes. D005440 Fluid Therapy Therapy whose basic objective is to restore the volume and composition of the body fluids to normal with respect to WATER-ELECTROLYTE BALANCE.
