Allergen-specific IgE antibodies are responsible for the generation of immediate-type hypersensitivity reactions. However, as described here by Geert Mudde, Roy Bheekha and Carla Bruijnzeel-Koomen, IgE may also be involved in the uptake and processing of allergens. Such IgE-mediated antigen presentation may lead to a continuous (over) activation of the immune system due to high titers of IgE and the presence of large numbers of allergen-specific Th2 cells. In addition, it may be a cause for the advance of disease from a 'single allergy' to 'multi-allergy' syndrome.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D006969 Hypersensitivity, Immediate Hypersensitivity reactions which occur within minutes of exposure to challenging antigen due to the release of histamine which follows the antigen-antibody reaction and causes smooth muscle contraction and increased vascular permeability. D007073 Immunoglobulin E An immunoglobulin associated with MAST CELLS. Overexpression has been associated with allergic hypersensitivity (HYPERSENSITIVITY, IMMEDIATE). IgE
D008211 Lymphocyte Cooperation T-cell enhancement of the B-cell response to thymic-dependent antigens. Cooperation, Lymphocyte,Cooperations, Lymphocyte,Lymphocyte Cooperations
D008213 Lymphocyte Activation Morphologic alteration of small B LYMPHOCYTES or T LYMPHOCYTES in culture into large blast-like cells able to synthesize DNA and RNA and to divide mitotically. It is induced by INTERLEUKINS; MITOGENS such as PHYTOHEMAGGLUTININS, and by specific ANTIGENS. It may also occur in vivo as in GRAFT REJECTION. D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000485 Allergens Antigen-type substances that produce immediate hypersensitivity (HYPERSENSITIVITY, IMMEDIATE). Allergen
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D000917 Antibody Formation The production of ANTIBODIES by proliferating and differentiated B-LYMPHOCYTES under stimulation by ANTIGENS. Antibody Production,Antibody Response,Antibody Responses,Formation, Antibody,Production, Antibody,Response, Antibody,Responses, Antibody
D017455 Receptors, IgE Specific molecular sites on the surface of B- and T-lymphocytes which combine with IgEs. Two subclasses exist: low affinity receptors (Fc epsilon RII) and high affinity receptors (Fc epsilon RI). Antigens, CD23,CD23 Antigens,Fc Receptors, epsilon,Fc epsilon Receptor,Fc epsilon Receptors,IgE Receptor,IgE Receptors,Receptors, Fc epsilon, epsilon Fc Receptor, epsilon Fc Receptors,CD 23 Antigens,CD23 Antigen,Fc epsilon RI,Fc epsilon RII,Immunoglobulin E Receptor,Antigen, CD23,Antigens, CD 23,Fc Receptor, epsilon,Receptor, Fc epsilon,Receptor, IgE,Receptor, Immunoglobulin E,Receptor, epsilon Fc,Receptors, epsilon Fc,epsilon RI, Fc,epsilon RII, Fc,epsilon Receptor, Fc,epsilon Receptors, Fc
D017578 Immunoglobulin Class Switching Gene rearrangement of the B-lymphocyte which results in a substitution in the type of heavy-chain constant region that is expressed. This allows the effector response to change while the antigen binding specificity (variable region) remains the same. The majority of class switching occurs by a DNA recombination event but it also can take place at the level of RNA processing.
