The middle fossa approach is frequently used for vestibular neurectomy in patients with Ménière's disease. Middle fossa vestibular neurectomy has been criticized for its surgical complications, especially transient facial paralysis. The complication rate of 198 middle fossa vestibular neurectomies performed between 1968 and 1992 is reported. Facial paralysis, wound infection, suture dehiscence, CSF leak, meningitis, subdural hematoma, dead ears, average hospitalization time and death were evaluated. The overall complication rate was 29.3%. The acceptable incidence of complications makes middle fossa vestibular neurectomy one of the most adequate surgical treatments for Ménière's disease.

D008297 Male Males
D008575 Meniere Disease A disease of the inner ear (LABYRINTH) that is characterized by fluctuating SENSORINEURAL HEARING LOSS; TINNITUS; episodic VERTIGO; and aural fullness. It is the most common form of endolymphatic hydrops. D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D011183 Postoperative Complications Pathologic processes that affect patients after a surgical procedure. They may or may not be related to the disease for which the surgery was done, and they may or may not be direct results of the surgery. Complication, Postoperative,Complications, Postoperative,Postoperative Complication
D005158 Facial Paralysis Severe or complete loss of facial muscle motor function. This condition may result from central or peripheral lesions. Damage to CNS motor pathways from the cerebral cortex to the facial nuclei in the pons leads to facial weakness that generally spares the forehead muscles. FACIAL NERVE DISEASES generally results in generalized hemifacial weakness. NEUROMUSCULAR JUNCTION DISEASES and MUSCULAR DISEASES may also cause facial paralysis or paresis. D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
D014725 Vestibular Nerve The vestibular part of the 8th cranial nerve (VESTIBULOCOCHLEAR NERVE). The vestibular nerve fibers arise from neurons of Scarpa's ganglion and project peripherally to vestibular hair cells and centrally to the VESTIBULAR NUCLEI of the BRAIN STEM. These fibers mediate the sense of balance and head position. Scarpa's Ganglion,Ganglion, Scarpa's,Nerve, Vestibular,Nerves, Vestibular,Scarpa Ganglion,Scarpas Ganglion,Vestibular Nerves
