The threat to public health in the United Kingdom of infections with Vero cytotoxin producing Escherichia coli (VTEC), and E. coli O157 in particular, has led the PHLS to develop guidance for control. Published and unpublished data have been reviewed by a subcommittee of the PHLS working group on VTEC. This paper summarises the review and presents interim guidelines for the control of VTEC infections.
