[Bacteriological and epidemiological considerations on shigelloses in South Vietnam (1969-1973)]. 1975

Nguyen-Van-Ai, and Nguyen-Duc-Hanh, and Le-Tien-Van, and Nguyen-Van-Le, and Truong-Minh-Ho

During the period from 1969 to 1973, a rectal swabs from 13.943 diarrhea patients of all ages were examined by bacteriological surveys. From these specimens, 981 strains of Shigella were isolated. The most commonly encounted were Shigella flexneri 2. All of strains of Shigella isolated were highly resistant to Aureomycin, Tetracyclin, Terramycin, Novobiocin and Chloramphenicol. There has been an increase in the development of multiresistance of Shigella. Colimycin and Streptomycin were the most effective antibiotics. The greatest number of Shigella were isolated among children under 2 years and during the driest months (March, April, May, June).

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007223 Infant A child between 1 and 23 months of age. Infants
D008297 Male Males
D009675 Novobiocin An antibiotic compound derived from Streptomyces niveus. It has a chemical structure similar to coumarin. Novobiocin binds to DNA gyrase, and blocks adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activity. (From Reynolds, Martindale The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p189) Crystallinic Acid,Streptonivicin,Novobiocin Calcium,Novobiocin Sodium,Novobiocin, Monosodium Salt,Calcium, Novobiocin,Monosodium Salt Novobiocin,Sodium, Novobiocin
D002648 Child A person 6 to 12 years of age. An individual 2 to 5 years old is CHILD, PRESCHOOL. Children
D002701 Chloramphenicol An antibiotic first isolated from cultures of Streptomyces venequelae in 1947 but now produced synthetically. It has a relatively simple structure and was the first broad-spectrum antibiotic to be discovered. It acts by interfering with bacterial protein synthesis and is mainly bacteriostatic. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 29th ed, p106) Cloranfenicol,Kloramfenikol,Levomycetin,Amphenicol,Amphenicols,Chlornitromycin,Chlorocid,Chloromycetin,Detreomycin,Ophthochlor,Syntomycin

D003091 Colistin Cyclic polypeptide antibiotic from Bacillus colistinus. It is composed of Polymyxins E1 and E2 (or Colistins A, B, and C) which act as detergents on cell membranes. Colistin is less toxic than Polymyxin B, but otherwise similar; the methanesulfonate is used orally. Polymyxin E,Colimycin,Colisticin,Colistin Sulfate,Coly-Mycin,Totazina,Sulfate, Colistin
D004352 Drug Resistance, Microbial The ability of microorganisms, especially bacteria, to resist or to become tolerant to chemotherapeutic agents, antimicrobial agents, or antibiotics. This resistance may be acquired through gene mutation or foreign DNA in transmissible plasmids (R FACTORS). D004405 Dysentery, Bacillary DYSENTERY caused by gram-negative rod-shaped enteric bacteria (ENTEROBACTERIACEAE), most often by the genus SHIGELLA. Shigella dysentery, Shigellosis, is classified into subgroups according to syndrome severity and the infectious species. Group A: SHIGELLA DYSENTERIAE (severest); Group B: SHIGELLA FLEXNERI; Group C: SHIGELLA BOYDII; and Group D: SHIGELLA SONNEI (mildest).
