Subperiosteal abscess (SA) is a well-known complication of osteomyelitis (OM) in children. The efficiency of treatment of OM with this complication is dependent on early drainage of the abscess. We present a prospective study of 32 children with clinical suspicion of OM. Ultrasonography detected SA in 13 of these children. In nine cases OM with SA was confirmed surgically and in the remaining four other radiographic modalities and/or blood cultures supported the sonographic diagnosis. In the remaining 19 cases, OM without SA was the final diagnosis.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008279 Magnetic Resonance Imaging Non-invasive method of demonstrating internal anatomy based on the principle that atomic nuclei in a strong magnetic field absorb pulses of radiofrequency energy and emit them as radiowaves which can be reconstructed into computerized images. The concept includes proton spin tomographic techniques. D001842 Bone and Bones A specialized CONNECTIVE TISSUE that is the main constituent of the SKELETON. The principal cellular component of bone is comprised of OSTEOBLASTS; OSTEOCYTES; and OSTEOCLASTS, while FIBRILLAR COLLAGENS and hydroxyapatite crystals form the BONE MATRIX.
