[Antibody-containing cells in the mucosa of the large intestine of patients with acute bacterial dysentery]. 1976

N B Shalygina, and T P Petrova, and N D Iushchuk

The authors traced the dynamics of appearance, increase and disappearance of O-antibody-containing cells in the mucosa of the distal portion of the large intestine in patients suffering from acute Sonne and Flexner dysentery (aspiration biopsy of the mucosa). The antibodies were revealed by the indirect Coons method. The total number of cells per 1 mm2 of 4 mum of the mucosal section the number of lymphoid cells and the content of the antibody-containing cells in % per total cell count of the lymphoid tissue was calculated. It was revealed that the antibody-containing cells appeared on the 4th day of the disease, reached the maximum on the 7th--8th and disappeared on the 22nd--25th day. Cells of the plasmocytic series containing no antidysentery antibodies, were revealed in large amounts even at the remote periods (up to 6 months) after recovery.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007413 Intestinal Mucosa Lining of the INTESTINES, consisting of an inner EPITHELIUM, a middle LAMINA PROPRIA, and an outer MUSCULARIS MUCOSAE. In the SMALL INTESTINE, the mucosa is characterized by a series of folds and abundance of absorptive cells (ENTEROCYTES) with MICROVILLI. D007420 Intestine, Large A segment of the LOWER GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT that includes the CECUM; the COLON; and the RECTUM. Large Intestine
D008297 Male Males
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D010950 Plasma Cells Specialized forms of antibody-producing B-LYMPHOCYTES. They synthesize and secrete immunoglobulin. They are found only in lymphoid organs and at sites of immune responses and normally do not circulate in the blood or lymph. D004405 Dysentery, Bacillary DYSENTERY caused by gram-negative rod-shaped enteric bacteria (ENTEROBACTERIACEAE), most often by the genus SHIGELLA. Shigella dysentery, Shigellosis, is classified into subgroups according to syndrome severity and the infectious species. Group A: SHIGELLA DYSENTERIAE (severest); Group B: SHIGELLA FLEXNERI; Group C: SHIGELLA BOYDII; and Group D: SHIGELLA SONNEI (mildest).
