In view of their expected anticonvulsant property, a series of 3-(p-sulfamoylphenyl)-4(3H)-quinazolinone derivatives (V) were synthesized by condensation of sulfanilamide with various 4H-3,1-benzoxazin-4-ones (III). Some 2-amido-N-(p-sulfamoylphenyl)benzamides (IV) were isolated as reaction intermediates. The structures of V were confirmed by IR, 1H-NMR, MS and elemental analyses. Some of the compounds V showed significant anticonvulsant effects against pentetrazol-induced convulsions.

D010433 Pentylenetetrazole A pharmaceutical agent that displays activity as a central nervous system and respiratory stimulant. It is considered a non-competitive GAMMA-AMINOBUTYRIC ACID antagonist. Pentylenetetrazole has been used experimentally to study seizure phenomenon and to identify pharmaceuticals that may control seizure susceptibility. D010634 Phenobarbital A barbituric acid derivative that acts as a nonselective central nervous system depressant. It potentiates GAMMA-AMINOBUTYRIC ACID action on GABA-A RECEPTORS, and modulates chloride currents through receptor channels. It also inhibits glutamate induced depolarizations.
