[Morphologic principles of callus distraction]. 1994

M Wiedemann
Klinik für Unfall- und Wiederherstellungschirurgie, Zentralklinikum Augsburg.

There are various ways and means of performing the callus distraction procedures used more and more frequently in the clinic today. The interplay of numerous factors affects the macroscopical and microscopical morphological appearance and thus the quality of the bone regenerate. The radiological appearance during and after distraction remains relatively constant and is well-known. Tissue maturation occurs in several phases, namely, an organisational, a longitudinal polarisation, an ossification, and a consolidation phase. The characteristic morphological signs of the individual phases will be described.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D001842 Bone and Bones A specialized CONNECTIVE TISSUE that is the main constituent of the SKELETON. The principal cellular component of bone is comprised of OSTEOBLASTS; OSTEOCYTES; and OSTEOCLASTS, while FIBRILLAR COLLAGENS and hydroxyapatite crystals form the BONE MATRIX. D001852 Bone Lengthening Increase in the longest dimension of a bone to correct anatomical deficiencies, congenital, traumatic, or as a result of disease. The lengthening is not restricted to long bones. The usual surgical methods are internal fixation and distraction. Lengthening, Bone
D001861 Bone Regeneration Renewal or repair of lost bone tissue. It excludes BONY CALLUS formed after BONE FRACTURES but not yet replaced by hard bone. Osteoconduction,Bone Regenerations,Regeneration, Bone,Regenerations, Bone
D002146 Bony Callus The bony deposit formed between and around the broken ends of BONE FRACTURES during normal healing. Callus,Callus, Bony
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D012756 Sheep Any of the ruminant mammals with curved horns in the genus Ovis, family Bovidae. They possess lachrymal grooves and interdigital glands, which are absent in GOATS. Ovis,Sheep, Dall,Dall Sheep,Ovis dalli
D016723 Bone Remodeling The continuous turnover of BONE MATRIX and mineral that involves first an increase in BONE RESORPTION (osteoclastic activity) and later, reactive BONE FORMATION (osteoblastic activity). The process of bone remodeling takes place in the adult skeleton at discrete foci. The process ensures the mechanical integrity of the skeleton throughout life and plays an important role in calcium HOMEOSTASIS. An imbalance in the regulation of bone remodeling's two contrasting events, bone resorption and bone formation, results in many of the metabolic bone diseases, such as OSTEOPOROSIS.
