A case of orbital hemangiopericytoma is reported in a 20-yr-old man presenting with decreased vision and painless proptosis of the left eye. This rare orbital tumor is reviewed in the literature, and in particular the neuroradiological findings, including those of computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and angiography are detailed in the presented case. MRI was found to be useful both in delineating precise anatomical relationships between the optic nerve and the tumor, and in differentiating from cavernous hemangiomas, the most common vascular tumors of the orbit, with the combination of CT and angiography.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008279 Magnetic Resonance Imaging Non-invasive method of demonstrating internal anatomy based on the principle that atomic nuclei in a strong magnetic field absorb pulses of radiofrequency energy and emit them as radiowaves which can be reconstructed into computerized images. The concept includes proton spin tomographic techniques. D003937 Diagnosis, Differential Determination of which one of two or more diseases or conditions a patient is suffering from by systematically comparing and contrasting results of diagnostic measures. Diagnoses, Differential,Differential Diagnoses,Differential Diagnosis
D005682 Gadolinium An element of the rare earth family of metals. It has the atomic symbol Gd, atomic number 64, and atomic weight 157.25. Its oxide is used in the control rods of some nuclear reactors.
D006393 Hemangiopericytoma A tumor composed of spindle cells with a rich vascular network, which apparently arises from pericytes, cells of smooth muscle origin that lie around small vessels. Benign and malignant hemangiopericytomas exist, and the rarity of these lesions has led to considerable confusion in distinguishing between benign and malignant variants. (From Dorland, 27th ed; DeVita Jr et al., Cancer: Principles & Practice of Oncology, 3d ed, p1364) Hemangiopericytomas
